Cupid-Our Most Famous Valentine Symbol

Cupid is the Roman's god of love and the son of Venus. In ancient Greece, he was known as Eros, the young son of Aphrodite, the goddess of love. Cupid is derived from the Latin word cupido, which means "desire."

He is a small, winged boy, often shown with eyes blindfolded, who carrys a bow and arrows. The arrows, are for striking the heart and once struck the heart makes its victim fall in love. Cupid is also portrayed as a young man with his beloved Psyche,(His mortal Bride Psyche in Roman mythology) with Venus, or with a small group of winged infants (the Amoretti or Amorini). Some traditions say that he was born from a silver egg. His Greek equivalent is Eros. The name is derived from the Latin cupido, "desire".

According to legend, Cupid's arrows come in two varieties: the Golden Arrow, which generally signifies true love, and the Leaden Arrow, which represents wanton and sensual passion. He is also known to sometimes carry a torch with which to inflame desire between men and women. Cupid is not always successful in his endeavors, however. Sometimes his arrows turn people away from those who fall in love with them. In some mythological tales, Venus was scratched by one of Cupid's arrows while playing with her son, the result being that the Godddess fell instantly in love with Adonis...the first man she saw after receiving the wound.

Cupid is the most famous of Valentine symbols. Cupid and his arrows have become the most popular of love signs, and love is most frequently depicted by two hearts pierced by Cupid's arrow.
